About this award

The Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration Bureau of Health Professionals awarded The Wright Center For Graduate Medical Education $2,562,696 on March 1, 2026, under the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education Payment Program (CFDA 93.530) to establish and operate a family medicine residency program.

The TWCGME-Scranton Family Medicine Program is a new, consortium-based residency training program sponsored by The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education with primary care training conducted at The Wright Center for Community Health (TWCCH), an FQHC, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The program began training residents in July 2025 and will serve the seven-county northeast Pennsylvania region, including urban and HRSA-designated rural settings. The service area experiences higher-than-state and national averages for chronic diseases including heart disease and cancer, opioid misuse and overdose, and concentrated poverty. According to the most recent Health Center Program Uniform Data System report, TWCCH served 28,187 patients through 113,648 clinic visits and 11,660 virtual/telehealth visits. Infrastructure for culturally sensitive care is underdeveloped; more than 35 languages are spoken within the Scranton School District's service area.

The period of performance runs from March 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029. Performance occurs in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The assistance type is Project Grant. THCGME awards are based on annual assessment of residency FTE slots and subject to reconciliation at the end of each budget period, with final amounts payable determined by resident FTE reporting.
