Description
Addiction medicine fellowship - description: the goal of the utah addiction medicine and addiction psychiatry fellowships program is to increase the number of physicians who are board-certified addiction specialists in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry who serve in medically underserved community-based settings, including rural areas, that integrate primary care with mental health disorder and substance use disorder (SUD) prevention and treatment services. This program will expand the number of fellows at the university of utah's acgme-accredited addiction medicine (AMF) and addiction psychiatry fellowship (APF). Fellows will train extensively in rural, tribal and medically underserved communities in utah and other intermountain west states, including populations with minimal available SUD specialist care and high rates of drug overdose death. Fellows will work in these areas to expand SUD specific medical care, reduce stigma, and enhance the skills of local clinicians. We anticipate that most fellows will work in a mental health or primary care hpsa after graduation. Specific, measurable objectives: this project will: --increase the yearly total number of fellows above the pre-grant baseline of 5 to 8. All hrsa-funded fellows will be trained in a single track that incorporates rotations in both rural, community-based settings and urban, community-based peripartum and adolescent addiction services. --implement new or enhanced curricula for fellows to improve fellow ability to refer patients to the legal and social systems that will help patients successfully navigate SUD. --increase the number of medical residents who complete addiction medicine rotations by 5 at the end of the first grant year, and by 2 additional positions in each subsequent year. How the project will be accomplished: hrsa funding will support stipends for fellows and the efforts of the university of utah principal investigator, core faculty, and project manager who will recruit qualified candidates to fill up to 3 additional addiction medicine and addiction psychiatry fellowship positions per year for 5 years with the first new slots opening july 1, 2025. With the input of community-based experiential sites, including a subcontract with a rural utah site, the PI will plan and implement clinical addiction rotations in rural, tribal and underserved areas of utah and the intermountain west. Required data will be collected and submitted to hrsa. Faculty will mentor addiction fellows in seeking post-training employment in underserved communities. Fellows' employment settings will be tracked for 5 years after fellowship completion to determine which communities they are serving. Post-project sustainability strategies for utah and other states will be developed throughout the life of the grant. Funding priority and funding preference: the university of utah is applying for funding priority 3: rural, tribal or underserved communities. The university of utah is eligible for funding preference under qualification 1: high MUC placement rate.
