The saltwater surf fishing program is built on a clear mission: to provide an inclusive, evidence-based recreational sport experience that promotes holistic wellbeing for veterans and service members

USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program, Inc. (USAWIHP) received a $175,000 Project Grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Health Administration, Under Secretary for Health, awarded on September 30, 2025, under the VA Grants for Adaptive Sports Programs for Disabled Veterans and Disabled Members of the Armed Forces program (CFDA 64.034). The grant funds the Saltwater Surf Fishing Program, an evidence-based recreational activity designed to promote holistic wellbeing for combat-wounded veterans and service members. The program will operate through September 30, 2026, and will be delivered in Mississippi.

Under this award, USAWIHP will plan, develop, manage, and implement adaptive surf fishing activities that support the physical and mental rehabilitation of disabled veterans and service members. Grant-funded activities include instruction and training in surf fishing techniques, procurement of specialized equipment, facilitation of participant engagement and competition, and technical assistance tailored to individuals with service-related physical disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, and mental health conditions. This award represents an expansion of USAWIHP's adaptive sports portfolio beyond its established ice hockey programming and reflects sustained federal investment in accessible rehabilitation and recovery opportunities for the disabled veteran population.
