Project Grant SB1AI136125
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $305,000 SBIR Phase I Project Grant to Giant Biosystems Inc. on March 1, 2025. The project aims to develop a rapid, point-of-care antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) kit that can provide results on the same day a sample is taken. This is expected to help physicians utilize the most effective antibiotics sooner, reducing antimicrobial resistance and associated economic burdens. The proposed microfluidic platform is designed to generate...
- This $991,832 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program supports the development of a novel rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) platform by Astek Diagnostics Inc., a minority-owned small business in Halethorpe, Maryland. The project aims to adapt the company's previously developed urine cartridge technology for use with cerebrospinal fluid and wound effluent specimens, characterize...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP) program (CFDA 47.084) provides $305,000.00 to Resonantia Diagnostics, Inc. to develop a transformative diagnostic platform for rapid identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of pathogens. The project aims to achieve three key technical objectives: (1) demonstrate accurate antimicrobial susceptibility testing at very low pathogen loads, (2) validate testing...
- Federal Grant Award Summary SKM Instruments, LLC received a $797,550 Project Grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under the Prevention of Disease, Disability, and Death by Infectious Diseases program (CFDA 93.084) to develop an ultra-rapid optical platform for antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) of pulmonary non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections. The award, effective September 30, 2025, with a completion date of May 31, 2026, supports research and...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) Project Grant award supports the development of a novel device that can rapidly and automatically extract pathogen DNA from whole blood samples to enable faster diagnosis of sepsis. The $274,858 award to New England Hemolytics, Inc., with a project period from September 1, 2024 to February 28, 2025, will fund the testing and optimization of this technology across common sepsis-causing pathogens. The...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I award to RT Microdx Inc. provides $274,362 to develop a novel molecular diagnostic platform for detecting respiratory diseases like strep throat. The platform aims to provide laboratory-quality accuracy for at-home use by non-healthcare professionals. Key technical objectives include optimizing the sensitivity of the platform's pH-sensitive polymer detection mechanism and ensuring robust performance at...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) Cooperative Agreement award of $984,381 to Cobio Diagnostics Inc. in Aurora, Colorado aims to expand a diagnostic tool that enables rapid, direct-from-specimen identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of major bloodborne bacterial pathogens. The project will develop a regulatory pathway for FDA clearance, characterize antibodies to expand the test, and validate the expanded tests...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) Project Grant award of $275,000 aims to develop a platform for detecting genetic antibiotic resistance motifs that can predict current and future susceptibility to therapeutics. The project will establish the feasibility of leveraging mutational signatures in bacterial DNA to identify antibiotic resistance status, including the potential for rapid development of multi-drug resistance. This approach...
- Astek Diagnostics Inc. received a $255,975 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Industrial Innovation on December 15, 2021 to support work completing August 31, 2022. The grant funds the development of rapid detection methods and determination of antibiotic resistance for blood-borne bacteria under the NSF Engineering program (CFDA 47.041). The Engineering program seeks to improve quality of life and economic strength by fostering innovation in engineering...
- This Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) provides $450,000.00 to the University of Texas at Austin over the period of January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2027. The project aims to develop novel biosensing tools for therapeutic drug monitoring, specifically for the antipsychotic medication clozapine. The key products and services to be delivered include: Selection and optimization of DNA/RNA aptamers that bind strongly and...
NEXT-GENERATION PHENOTYPIC ANTIMICROBIAL SUSCEPTIBILITY TEST PLATFORM: RAPID RESULTSAND COMPREHENSIVE MENUS - THE GOAL OF THIS CRP SBIR PROPOSAL IS TO FUND FOUR PROJECTS TO ADVANCE THE COMMERCIAL READINESS OF SELUX'S RAPID, COMPREHENSIVE, LOW-COST, PHENOTYPIC ANTIBIOTIC SUSCEPTIBILITY TEST (AST) SYSTEM. SELUX'S NEXT-GENERATION PHENOTYPING (NGP) PLATFORM UNIQUELY ENABLES RAPID AST WITH COMPREHENSIVE ANTIMICROBIAL MENUS OF >50 DRUGS AT A LOW COST FROM ISOLATES AND POSITIVE BLOOD CULTURE SAMPLES. AIMS 1 AND 2 FOCUS ON COST REDUCTION PROJECTS IMPORTANT FOR EARLY CUSTOMER ADOPTION. AIM 1 COMPRISES ANALYTICAL STUDIES TO SUPPORT MULTIPLEX ORAL PANELS AND AIM 2 IS A DFM REDESIGN OF THE ANALYZER CONSUMABLE PACK. AIMS 3 AND 4 FOCUSES ON WORK NECESSARY FOR LATER CUSTOMER ADOPTION. AIM 3 IS A YEARLONG BENCHMARKING STUDY THAT WILL COMPARE SELUX NGP PERFORMANCE AGAINST LEGACY AST SYSTEMS AND REFERENCE METHODS. BY IMPROVING SYSTEM WORKFLOWS AND BENCHMARKING AST PERFORMANCE ACROSS LEGACY SYSTEMS CRP FUNDING WILL HELP POSITION SELUX NGP AS THE DOMINANT AST PLATFORM OF THE FUTURE.
