Rejuvenation Technologies Inc. (RTI) received a $2.06M Project Grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) for the period July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2028. The grant supports the continued advancement of a telomere extension biologic therapy designed to treat alcoholic hepatitis (AH), a severe acute form of alcohol-associated liver disease with mortality rates of 25-50% within one month of presentation. RTI will develop and translate a therapeutic approach utilizing telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) messenger RNA delivered via hepatocyte-targeted lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) administered intravenously to extend shortened telomeres in liver cells, thereby reversing cellular senescence and limiting the fibrogenic cascade that leads to liver failure. The deliverables under this award include advancing the translational development of the TERT mRNA-LNP therapeutic candidate toward Investigational New Drug (IND) status. RTI's platform technology enables efficient hepatocyte transfection (>99% at 0.05 mg/kg doses) even in cirrhotic livers, with the therapeutic agent degrading naturally within days after telomere extension occurs. This grant-funded research addresses a critical unmet medical need in the treatment of alcoholic hepatitis, where current standard-of-care corticosteroids have proven ineffective at reducing patient mortality.Federal Grant Award Summary
