About this award

The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded the University of Missouri System $249,834 on January 1, 2026, under the Promotion of the Humanities Research program (CFDA 45.161) to produce three digital-born scholarly publications analyzing and interpreting archaeological evidence from Gabii, a Latin town near Rome with an exceptionally preserved sequence spanning 1500 years from the early Iron Age to late Antiquity. The award funds analysis, interpretation, and contextualization of excavation materials from a large site transect completed in 2023, with publications addressing Gabii's early origins, initial urbanization, formation and later repurposing of civic and commercial infrastructure, and final abandonment. The scholarly products will connect findings to contemporary urban studies debates and advance practices in digital publishing of archaeological data by combining narrative and 3D visualization in interactive formats. Work is performed in Missouri with a period of performance extending through December 31, 2028.

Description

Recreating urban biographies in roman italy: the gabii project reports [the proposal is centered on the investigation of gabii, a latin town near rome, italy, whose exceptionally preserved archaeological sequence spans 1500 years of history from the early iron age to late antiquity. The aim of the collaborative research is to analyze, interpret, and contextualize the evidence produced through the excavation of a large transect of the site, completed in 2023. The results will be presented in three digital-born scholarly publications that will shine a light on the early beginnings of gabii, the initial wave of its urbanization, the formation of both civic and commercial infrastructure, and their later repurposing prior to final abandonment. While connecting the findings with contemporary debates about urban life, these scholarly products will also advance practices in the digital publishing of archaeological data in which narrative and 3D visualization are combined in interactive ways.]
