About this award
The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded Emory University $100,000 on January 1, 2026, under the Promotion of the Humanities Research program (CFDA 45.161) to support scholarly editing and annotation of Nietzsche's unpublished fragments from the period of The Birth of Tragedy. The award funds work on Nietzsche's notebooks that expand upon and reimagine his influential first book, including continuations of unpublished works on the future of educational institutions and philosophy in the tragic age of the Greeks. The notebooks contain material not found elsewhere in Nietzsche's published works, including sketches for a play on the ancient Greek philosopher Empedocles, deeper engagement with ancient Greek sources in the original language, poetic compositions, musical sketches, and biographical records spanning Nietzsche's teaching schedules, personal accounts, and his experiences as an ambulance driver during the Franco-Prussian War. The period of performance runs from January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2026, with performance taking place in Georgia. Emory passed through funding to sub-recipient DePaul University, located in Chicago, Illinois, under a sub-award dated February 26, 2026, to continue work on the same Nietzsche project.
Description
Nietzsche, unpublished fragments from the period of the birth of tragedy [these notes stem from the time of his first book, the birth of tragedy, and include material that expands upon and reimagines that influential work. Continuations of other unpublished works like on the future of our educational institutions and philosophy in the tragic age of the greeks are also proposed. In these notebooks, we see nietzsche come to characterize his thinking as an inversion of plato. Across these pages we also encounter material not found in his other works, like sketches for a play on the ancient greek philosopher empedocles, a deeper engagement with ancient greek sources in the original language, as well as poetic compositions, and musical sketches of nietzsche?s own. Lastly, the notebooks are records of nietzsche?s biography, from his teaching schedules and lists of amounts owed or pages written to the notebook he kept while driving an ambulance in the franco-prussian war.]
