Description
Seminar on simone weil's need for roots [born in 1909 in paris, and dying in exile in london in 1943, the philosopher simone weil demonstrated a deep commitment to her country while maintaining compassion for all people. Her idea of compassionate citizenship emerged most strongly in her final book, the need for roots. Last year penguin press released a new translation of the need for roots in its penguin classics series. To draw attention to this text-reflection on which would help not only weil scholarship but also our public discourse on the relevance of compassion to patriotism today- we aim to host two separate events at texas a & m: the american weil society (AWS) annual colloquy; and a subsequent seminar. From april 23-25 of 2026, we will host the AWS annual colloquy. We also aim to host a seminar on the need for roots following the colloquy. This five-day seminar would bring together leading weil scholars to study the new translation of the need for roots.]
