About this award

This federal Project Grant award of $186,000.00 from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Promotion of the Humanities Research program (CFDA 45.161) supports the Society for Classical Studies' (SCS) annual fellowship program at the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae (TLL) Institute in Munich, Germany. The grant provides 12-month residencies for international scholars to conduct specialized lexicographical research on the Latin language, resulting in publications in the TLL journal as well as scholarly articles and books that advance the understanding of Latin linguistics, literature, rhetoric, and cultural history. This recurring fellowship program, which has been funded by the NEH since 1984, enables these scholars to undertake original research and contribute new knowledge in the field of classical studies.

Description

Fellows begin tenure in the summer and with the exception of one or two brief visits back to the united states, remain in munich conducting their work at the institute for the subsequent twelve months. After a short period of training in specialized lexicographical techniques, which are not taught in PHD programs, TLL fellows undertake original lexicographical research in latin that results in two distinct but equally important types of research publication: (1) lexicographical articles in the TLL itself; and (2) journal articles and books in which fellows bring their lexicographical expertise and knowledge to bear on research topics in linguistics, literary and rhetorical studies, and cultural history (see the list of publications of recent fellows). These publications advance our understanding of the nuances of the latin language and their impact on modern languages. (edited by staff)]
