- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $616,132 on August 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop nanocarrier-based immunotherapeutic strategies for type-1 diabetes treatment. The research targets immune tolerance induction against type-1 diabetes through biomaterial nanocarriers designed for lymph node targeting, a key site for immune...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Op-T-Mune, Inc. $635,040 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct a Phase 2A clinical trial of OPT101, a CD40-targeting peptide for type 1 diabetes mellitus. OPT101 is a 15-amino-acid peptide derived from CD154 protein that targets CD40 on pathogenic T cells (TH40 cells) with specificity conferred through integrin association. The...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded $868,670 to Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope on February 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct basic research on beta cell regeneration therapy for type 1 diabetes. The research investigates synergistic combinations of DYRK1A inhibitors, GLP-1 receptor agonists (specifically exenatide), and low-dose interleukin-2 to...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Cornell University $1,009,332 on September 25, 2025, to develop an immunomodulatory and vascularized cell delivery device for type 1 diabetes cell therapy under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The project aims to engineer a subcutaneous, cell-retaining device that permits blood vessel penetration and establishes an immunotolerant environment for islet delivery in...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Angiotensin Therapeutics Inc. $314,355 on September 15, 2025, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop a bioengineered soluble ACE2 protein therapeutic for delayed graft function in kidney transplantation. Delayed graft function affects up to 50 percent of deceased-donor kidney transplant recipients and is caused by acute proximal tubular injury from...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Persista Bio Inc. $287,250 on September 11, 2025, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop the manufacturing process for the cell capsule of the O2LINE implant system, an oxygenated cell encapsulation technology targeting Type 1 Diabetes treatment. The O2LINE system addresses limitations in current insulin pump therapy and donor-dependent islet...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Delphi Stem, Inc. $306,863 on August 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop a framework for evaluating type 2 diabetes medication efficacy using patient-derived cellular models. The recipient will generate personalized islet-like aggregates from patient cells to predict drug responsiveness and tailor treatment regimens, with the goal of improving...
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Gentibio, Inc. $1,066,332 on August 24, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop GNTI-148, an allogeneic islet-specific engineered regulatory T cell therapy for treating newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. GNTI-148 is designed to restore immune tolerance and preserve pancreatic islet function in newly diagnosed T1D patients with the goal of halting disease progression. The therapy builds on Gentibio's proprietary platform featuring stable FOXP3 expression, pancreatic islet-specific targeting, and tunable IL-2 signaling via a chemically inducible signaling complex. By integrating hypoimmune engineering technology, GNTI-148 can be delivered as an off-the-shelf allogeneic product, offering the durable efficacy of autologous therapies at lower cost and greater accessibility through allogeneic scalability. Work is performed in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The period of performance runs through July 31, 2028. This is a Phase II SBIR award. The funding supports proof-of-concept, safety and toxicology, and technical development studies to validate GNTI-148 functionality, safety, and product feasibility.
