About this award
The Bureau of Reclamation awarded $959,925.80 to the Central Utah Water Conservancy District under the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act program (CFDA 15.517) on July 1, 2025, for the June Sucker Recovery Implementation Program (JSRIP). The project, extending through September 30, 2029, delivers comprehensive endangered species recovery and habitat restoration services in Utah Lake and associated waterways. Key products and services include research, monitoring, and removal of common carp from Utah Lake using approved methods such as seines, trawls, and traps; development and implementation of a northern pike population control strategy; habitat restoration activities for the June sucker in Utah Lake; fish passage improvements through removal or reconstruction of diversion dams in Hobble Creek; investigation of alternative water supplies to supplement the Provo River and Utah Lake; development of a June sucker population monitoring plan; and continuation of captive rearing and augmentation programs for the endangered June sucker species.
These activities are designed to support endangered species recovery objectives while managing aquatic invasive species and improving fish habitat associated with Bureau of Reclamation water systems. All common carp removal activities require certification from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, ensuring compliance with state oversight and approved removal techniques. The project also emphasizes stakeholder engagement through expanded outreach and education efforts to involve partners in the recovery initiative.
