PUBLIC PURPOSE: THE TRIBE IS EXPERIENCING MORE IMPACTS FROM A CHANGING CLIMATE, HOTTER SUMMERS, AND FREQUENT DROUGHTS. THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL ASSIST THE TRIBE TO DEVELOP, MANAGE, AND PROTECT THE FISHERY RESOURCES OF THE KLAMATH BASIN. ALSO, MAKING FUNDING AVAILABLE TO THE TRIBE FOR THE PROJECT, RECLAMATION IS HELPING THE TRIBE BECOME MORE SELF-SUFFICIENT AND SUSTAINABLE.PROJECT ACTIVITIES: THE PROPOSED PROJECT CONSISTS OF THREE COMPONENTS.FIRST, THE PROJECT INCLUDES A TWO-YEAR STUDY THAT WILL ADD TWO ADDITIONAL YEARS OF DATA COLLECTION (2025 AND 2026) TO PROVIDE THE TRIBE WITH A SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF CHANGES TO THE LOWER KLAMATH RIVER AND ITS SUBSTRATE COMPOSITION AS THE DAM REMOVAL PROCESS IS COMPLETED AND RESTORATION ACTIVITIES ARE IMPLEMENTED IN THE UPPER KLAMATH RIVER BASIN.SECONDLY, DRONE OPERATION TRAINING WILL ENHANCE THE TRIBES NATURAL RESOURCES DEPARTMENTS (NRD) CAPACITY TO COLLECT GEO-REFERENCED AERIAL IMAGERY FOR COMPARISON WITH HISTORICAL AERIAL PHOTOS AND FOR OTHER SPECIFIC PROJECT NEEDS.LASTLY, THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE TRIBES NRD WEB PRESENCE WILL IMPROVE COMMUNICATION WITH AND OUTREACH TO TRIBAL CITIZENS REGARDING THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE AREA, AS WELL AS CURRENT PROJECTS AND PLANNING EFFORTS.BENEFITS: THE TRIBE WILL POSSESS A 4-YEAR TIME -SERIES OF BATHYMETRIC AND SEDIMENT CHARACTERIZATION DATA FOR THE LOWER KLAMATH RIVER ADJACENT TO THE TRIBES RESERVATION, INCLUDING BOTH A PRE-DAM REMOVAL BASELINE (2023), A DAM REMOVAL IN PROGRESS YEAR (2024), AND TWO SUBSEQUENT SEASONS OF POST-DAM REMOVAL DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSES. THESE DATA AND ANALYSES WILL PROVIDE THE TRIBE A ROBUST UNDERSTANDING OF DAM-SEDIMENTS IMPACTS TO THE LOWER RIVER CHANNEL AND ITS HABITATS.SECONDLY, DRONE TRAINING WILL INCREASE NR DEPARTMENT CAPACITY TO BE ABLE TO COLLECT GEO-REFERENCED AERIAL IMAGERY FOR COMPARISON WITH HISTORICAL AERIAL PHOTOS AND FOR OTHER SPECIFIC PROJECT NEEDS.LASTLY THE ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE TRIBES NR WEB PRESENCE WILL ENHANCE COMMUNICATION WITH AND OUTREACH TO TRIBAL CITIZENS REGARDING THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE AREA AS WELL AS CURRENT PROJECTS AND PLANNING EFFORTS.
