Description

Activities
The u. S. Bureau of reclamations (reclamation) first project in the united states was construction of the truckee canal (canal) in 1905. The canal is approximately 31 miles long and allows for interbasin diversions from the truckee river to the carson river. IT is used to convey surface water from the truckee river to water right holders in the truckee division in fernley, nevada and provide a supplemental water source for water right holders in the carson division in fallon, nevada. Approximately 26 miles of the canal is unlined with earthen embankments.seepage losses from unlined canals can represent substantial inefficiencies in surface water conveyance, accounting for 15 to 50 percent of the total diverted volume, requiring more water to be diverted to meet irrigation demand. The volume of water diverted for agriculture can result in substantial declines in streamflow that may result in water quality and ecosystem impacts. Improvements in conveyance efficiency are a critical resource management objective to conserve water and ensure farmers receive their permitted water allocations (naranjo ET AL. 2023).the objectives of this project are to collect geophysical survey data and provide an interpretative report that will be used to identify seep sources and quantify seepage losses along the canal.deliverables and expected outcomes: data collected from geophysical surveys will be used to identify subsurface features that contribute to seepage losses along sections of known seeps. Geophysical surveys using non-intrusive evaluation of infiltration potential can be obtain at the meters to kilometers scale. A recent geophysical survey along a new seep within the derby reach onto private property on canal road proved successful in identifying the pathway of horizontal flow from the canal through the embankment, water table and discharge on the land surface. Thus, to provide consistent methods and interpretations, reclamation will collaborate with the ctemps at UNR. The work involves electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) using a 48 channel abem terrameter capable of both resistivity and induced polarization. Based on unrs experience with conducting surveys along the derby reach, IT is estimated that two 48 channel surveys can be completed per day and will acquire ERT at 10 seep transect sites along the canal while IT is flowing and when dry, for twenty surveys total. In addition to data acquisition, ctemps will filter and provide resistivity depth inversions in a final report to reclamation. In place of or in addition to the ERT surveys, UNR can use seismic techniques to develop shear-wave velocity models. The velocity models have the potential to reveal depth to bedrock, or other changes in stratigraphy, and corroborate ERT interpretations. Ctemps is also cable of providing drone surveys in selected areas if time allows. After conducting the geophysical surveys, UNR shall provide reclamation the following deliverables: processed data, a draft interpretive report reviewed by USGS, and a final report. UNR will need to work with USGS to make the processed data publicly available as a data release in sciencebase.beneficiaries: the publicsubrecipient activities (if known or specified at time of award): n a
