The U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $3,786,000 Project Grant under the WaterSMART (Sustain and Manage America's Resources for Tomorrow) grant program (CFDA 15.507) to the Firebaugh Canal Water District in Mendota, California. The funding will be used to concrete line 2.08 miles of the 3rd Lift Canal and construct a 60-acre-foot storage reservoir adjacent to the lined section. This project is expected to result in annual water savings of 430 acre-feet that are currently being lost to a saline sink. In addition to conserving water, the project will reduce water delivery lag times, improving operational flexibility and sustainability in the drought-stricken region. The project period is from January 15, 2025 to June 30, 2026.
