About this award

The Resource Conservation District of Monterey County (RCD) received a $1,975,005.92 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation under the WaterSMART (Sustain and Manage America's Resources for Tomorrow) program (CFDA 15.507). The funding will be used to eradicate 150 acres of invasive Arundo donax (Arundo) from a five-mile stretch of the Salinas River in Monterey County, California. Arundo infestations degrade fish and wildlife habitat, alter hydrologic processes, increase fire risk, and increase flood risk in the region. The Arundo will be removed through mechanical and chemical means, and native riparian plants will be seeded into the control areas. This project is part of a larger effort to treat approximately 1,500 riparian acres in the Salinas River and is supported by the Greater Monterey County Integrated Regional Water Management Plan and the Salinas River Long-Term Management Plan. RCD of Monterey County will partner with the Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency, the Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner's Office, the California Wildlife Conservation Board, and private landowners along the Salinas River to deliver the project. The grant period runs from July 7, 2023 to March 31, 2026.
