The research examines how cattle, meso-herbivore wildlife, and mega-herbivores (elephants and giraffes) compete,...
- This $196,163 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) is funding a collaborative research project on developing advanced mathematical models to improve understanding and management of schistosomiasis transmission dynamics. The project is a collaboration between the University of Florida, University of Georgia, and University of Massachusetts, and aims to create innovative hybrid...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the University of Notre Dame DU Lac $464,176 on April 3, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to evaluate species-specific yeast RNAi insecticides for sand fly control as vectors of leishmaniasis. The research evaluates the potential of RNAi yeast-based insecticides to control sand flies, particularly the genera Phlebotomus (Africa, Asia, Europe) and Lutzomyia (Americas), which transmit...
- The Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center awarded the University of Rochester $908,204 on June 1, 2026, under the International Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.989) to support mentored research and career development training focused on neurocognitive impairment among HIV-infected and HIV-negative meningitis patients in rural, northern Uganda. The award funds validation of neurocognitive assessment tools to determine...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the University of Notre Dame DU Lac $709,532 on September 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct systematic research into the cytoplasmic pathway for peptidoglycan recycling in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an antibiotic-resistant gram-negative bacterial pathogen responsible for recurrent lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients. The work addresses two specific aims. The first...
- The Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center awarded the University of Washington $417,681 on August 20, 2026, under the International Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.989) to develop and evaluate a Systems Analysis and Improvement Approach to optimize cardiometabolic care delivery for hypertension and type 2 diabetes in central Mozambique. The recipient will apply the SAIA implementation strategy to improve diagnosis and...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Rhode Island Hospital $2.737 million on September 24, 2025, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct a randomized controlled trial evaluating praziquantel treatment frequencies for schistosomiasis-related hepatic fibrosis in Uganda. Rhode Island Hospital will enroll 600 subjects aged 15–40 with compensated schistosomal fibrosis at Lake Albert, Uganda, and randomize them to receive...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Notre Dame received a $125,998 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Office of Integrative Activities under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) on August 15, 2025, with a completion date of July 31, 2028. This award supports U.S. researchers' participation in the Biorepositories Build Adaptive and Resilient Capacity (BIOARC) project, a competitively selected initiative under the Belmont Forum, a 55-country consortium focused on...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Notre Dame DU Lac received a $459,439 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855), effective July 7, 2025, with completion scheduled for June 30, 2027. The grant supports research addressing acute cellular rejection (ACR) in organ transplantation through investigation of CD8+ T cell alloreactivity and its relationship to viral...
The Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center awarded the University of Notre Dame DU Lac $189,000 on September 1, 2026, under the International Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.989) to identify ecological and behavioral mechanisms driving the relationship between water hyacinth density and schistosomiasis mansoni prevalence in Lake Victoria. The project will resolve a critical scientific question before an aquatic vegetation removal (AVR) intervention developed and proven in Senegal can be safely scaled to East Africa. Preliminary evidence suggests a non-linear, hump-shaped relationship between water hyacinth coverage and S. mansoni infection rates in Kenya—a pattern potentially driven by water hyacinth simultaneously increasing snail habitat and parasite density while reducing human water contact at high coverage levels. Removing hyacinth without understanding these mechanisms risks unintentionally increasing disease transmission. Kenya provides a natural laboratory unavailable in the United States because active schistosomiasis transmission occurs across natural gradients of water hyacinth, enabling ecological and behavioral mechanisms to be studied under real-world conditions. The award supports research performed at Notre Dame's campus in Notre Dame, Indiana, with a period of performance from September 1, 2026, through June 30, 2028. The assistance type is a Project Grant.
