The award funds investigation of sensory-motor transformations in neural circuits controlling object-directed walking in Drosophila melanogaster. The research examines how visual...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Florida International University $471,698 on May 13, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate the role of perivascular fibroblasts in secondary spinal cord injury. The research focuses on peptidase inhibitor 16 (PI16) as a novel therapeutic target for neuroprotection after spinal cord injury. Preliminary studies indicate that activation of...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Texas A&M University $500,307 on April 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate cross-neuronal structural plasticity in Drosophila motor circuits. The research addresses how different neuron and synapse types undergo structural rewiring in response to neural injury, with focus on how premotor neurons, motor neurons, and muscles in...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Florida State University $448,943 on September 3, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) to engineer and bio-manufacture extracellular vesicles secreted by M2 microglia-like cells derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells for stroke therapy. The research aims to promote neural regeneration in ischemic stroke by developing extracellular vesicles that...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Emory University $428,218 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to develop subcellularly resolved spatial genomics approaches for studying axon regeneration. The research maps the nerve regenerative landscape by building a three-dimensional spatial single-cell transcriptomics atlas of dorsal root ganglia in mice, training a...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of California, Los Angeles $495,164 on June 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to support research investigating mechanisms of Schwann cell development and plasticity in peripheral nerve regeneration. The research focuses on the MITF transcription factor as an injury-induced regulator of Schwann cell plasticity. The project will use...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded The Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania $100,228 on September 30, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to conduct optical interrogation of neural mechanisms mediating force production. The recipient will employ in vivo two-photon calcium imaging to record motor neuron activity and proprioceptive inputs in mice during licking and...
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Florida Atlantic University $448,664 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate molecular mechanisms underlying motor exit point glia function. The funded research characterizes a novel population of glia residing at transition zones between the central and peripheral nervous systems. Motor exit point glia originate in the spinal cord, migrate into the peripheral nervous system to myelinate motor axons, and regulate oligodendrocyte migration at the spinal cord's ventral border. The project pursues three specific aims: defining motor exit point glia gene expression profiles using single-cell RNA-sequencing datasets and in situ hybridization to validate markers and generate reporter and mutant lines; investigating peripheral nervous system myelination by motor exit point glia; and characterizing regulatory mechanisms that govern the migration and function of these hybrid central/peripheral glial cells. The work will generate hypothesis-driven projects for incoming students. Performance occurs at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, over the period of September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2029.
