The award, with a performance period from August 1, 2025 to July 31, 2030, will fund the development of computer-aided synthesis planning (CASP) tools to generalize known enzymatic reactions and predict routes for producing...
- This federal Project Grant award of $378,672 from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) aims to develop a bioorthogonal chemistry-based live-cell imaging technology to study protein lactylation at the spatiotemporal scale. The project, conducted by Bucknell University, will design a fluoro-substituted L-lactic acid metabolic analog that reacts via a novel bioorthogonal fluorine-selenol substitution...
- This federal Project Grant award of $442,710, awarded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859), is focused on characterizing novel lanthipeptide natural products from marine bacteria. The objective is to structurally elucidate the lanthipeptide compounds produced by two biosynthetic gene clusters identified in an ecologically important marine bacterial species, test their antibiotic potential against...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859), provides $450,313 in funding to The Johns Hopkins University from June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2030. The project aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms and protein dynamics that enable the engineering of nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs), multidomain enzymatic factories that produce complex natural products with...
- This $306,782 Project Grant awarded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859), supports the continued development and validation of a panel of six sialoglycan-recognizing probes (SGRPs) by Z Biotech, LLC. The project aims to optimize these specialized molecular tools, which leverage naturally evolved microbial sialoglycan-binding proteins, for use in common laboratory techniques like ELISA, Western...
- The Project Grant titled "MECHANISMS OF BACTERIAL LYSIS SENSING" was awarded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) under the Biomedical Research and Research Training (CFDA 93.859) federal grant program. The $417,450 award was made on August 12, 2025 to Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to conduct research aimed at developing a comprehensive understanding of bacterial "lysis sensing" - a novel mechanism by which bacteria detect threats and respond by...
- The National Institutes of Health's National Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded Oragenics, Inc. a $769,962 Project Grant under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) to support computer-aided design of novel lantibiotics with improved antibiotic properties from August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2022. Specifically, the awardee will investigate the molecular interaction between the lantibiotic mutacin 1140 and its target in silico to rank analogs, synthesize and...
- This Project Grant award of $440,000.00 from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859), is focused on two key research areas: Developing a quantitative understanding of the processes involved when contractile injection systems (e.g. phage tails, tailocins, Type VI secretion systems) breach bacterial cell envelopes. This knowledge will be applied to the design and retargeting of R-type pyocins...
This $457,088 Project Grant award from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859), supports the development of imaging tools to improve the activity of endolysins, a promising alternative to traditional antibiotics for treating antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. The key products and services to be delivered include: Synthesizing a panel of internally quenched substrates to assess the activity of the model endolysin ChapK, which exhibits high lytic activity against Staphylococcus but suboptimal performance under physiological conditions. Establishing methods to use these synthetic substrates to evolve ChapK for improved thermostability through a computational-guided approach, screening mutant libraries in a high-throughput manner to identify top hits for further characterization. This project will expand the tools available to evaluate endolysin activity and provide a more targeted approach to improving these potential therapeutic enzymes. The work will be driven by undergraduate researchers and a postbaccalaureate student through summer and senior thesis projects, as well as a course-based research experience.
