The University of Miami Coral Gables has been awarded a $1,927,030 Project Grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242). This 5-year grant will fund the implementation and evaluation of evidence-based treatments for depression and treatment adherence among persons with HIV in South Africa.

The key products and services to be delivered under this grant include: (1) expanding the role of nurses to deliver cognitive behavioral therapy for adherence and depression (CBT-AD); (2) providing training to decrease mental health stigma and improve screening and referral to evidence-based depression treatments; and (3) implementing two levels of implementation strategies - a core set and an enhanced set - to increase the reach of these evidence-based treatments. The primary implementation outcome is the proportion of patients who start CBT-AD and/or antidepressant medication, while effectiveness outcomes include improvements in depression and viral suppression rates. This study aims to develop a replicable implementation model for delivering integrated mental health and HIV care in South Africa.
