The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) received a $603,510 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) under the Mental Health Research Grants (CFDA 93.242) program. The grant, awarded on July 10, 2024, will fund a longitudinal study to examine how features of the primary school environment in Tanzania impact youth mental health trajectories and buffer the effects of childhood adversities. The study aims to: 1) develop culturally relevant measurement tools to assess the school environment, 2) investigate how school environment factors influence mental health over time, and 3) determine if positive school environments can mitigate the negative impacts of adversities such as violence exposure and deprivation. The project will collect data from teachers, caregivers, and 3,000 5th grade students in 60 Tanzanian primary schools over 3 years to achieve these goals. Findings are expected to identify modifiable school-based interventions to promote the mental wellbeing of Tanzanian youth.
