Project Grant R01HL177289
- This Project Grant award for $355,935 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research federal grant program (CFDA 93.837) supports the development of a novel, oral immunoregulatory therapeutic for the treatment of asthma. The primary objectives are to characterize the therapeutic efficacy and dosing regimen of the compound in mouse models of asthma, and to evaluate its ability to modulate immune function and suppress inflammation in human...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837), supports research to investigate how early-life inflammation and viral infections shape the development and function of type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) in the lungs, and their role in driving childhood asthma susceptibility. The $740,709 award to the University of Utah is intended to define the cellular and molecular mechanisms by...
- This Project Grant award from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research federal grant program (CFDA 93.837), is funding a research project titled "Emulating Hypothetical Target Trials to Establish the Comparative Effectiveness of Biologics in Asthma." The $834,840 award to Brigham & Women's Hospital, a subsidiary of Partners Healthcare System, supports research to generate evidence on the comparative effectiveness of biologic...
- This Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) totaling $347,608 supports Biotherapeutics, Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology company, to develop a novel oral immunoregulatory therapeutic for the treatment of asthma. The goal is to characterize the therapeutic efficacy and route of administration of a new drug candidate in preclinical mouse models of asthma. This SBIR Phase I project aims to advance the development...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) provides $288,986 to Biotherapeutics, Inc., a biotechnology company in Blacksburg, VA. The grant supports the development of a novel oral immunoregulatory therapeutic for the treatment of asthma. The key objectives are to: 1) Determine the safety profile and pharmacokinetics of the new therapeutic in rats, and 2) Characterize the therapeutic...
- The federal Project Grant award titled "Targeting the Stromal Niche for Tissue-Resident Lymphocytes in Asthma" was provided by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837). The $636,843 award will fund research to characterize a targetable stromal factor that alters immune cell accumulation in the lung and define the downstream effects on airway epithelial cells. The project aims to leverage novel genetic tools, human...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research Federal Grant Program (CFDA 93.855), awarded a $250,000 Project Grant to The General Hospital Corporation (Massachusetts General Hospital) for the project "Lung-Resident Memory TH2 Cells in Asthma: New Therapeutic Targets". The project aims to identify key pathways that mediate the survival and maintenance of Type 2 T helper (TH2) cells in the lungs of asthma...
- This Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 - Cardiovascular Diseases Research) provides $760,759 to the University of Illinois to examine the immunoregulatory role of a specific dendritic cell subset, CX3CR1+CDC2, in allergic lung inflammation. The project aims to characterize the anti-inflammatory functions of this cell population and its impact on regulatory T cell development and the resolution of allergic asthma symptoms. Through the use of novel...
- The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), through its Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837), awarded a $172,724 project grant to The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) on February 28, 2025. The grant supports research to investigate the epigenetic signatures and gene regulatory networks driving the trans-differentiation of alveolar type II (AT2) cells into airway-like basal cells under homeostatic conditions and in the context of fibrotic...
- This $387,116 Project Grant award from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) supports research at the University of South Florida to investigate the sensory neuronal mechanisms underlying the development of house dust mite-induced airway hyperreactivity, a key characteristic of asthma. The long-term goal is to define the neural mechanisms triggered by house dust mite exposure that lead to the development of airway...
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded a $1,436,586 Project Grant under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to the San Diego Biomedical Research Institute. The purpose of this 24-month project is to assess the role of a novel subset of cytotoxic CD4+ T cells (CD4-CTLs) in severe asthma pathogenesis and response to Type 2 (T2) biologic therapies. Led by a multidisciplinary team, the INSIGHTS study will analyze airway CD4-CTLs from 160 severe asthma patients before, and 12- and 24-months after initiating T2-biologic therapy. The project aims to evaluate the impact of CD4-CTLs on T2-biologic treatment response, with samples collected across clinical centers in the U.S. and U.K. The findings could provide insights into alternative pathophysiological drivers of severe, corticosteroid-resistant asthma beyond the established T2 immune biomarkers.
