The research will enroll 400 children in English and Spanish language families using long-term home mechanical...
- The National Institutes of Health National Heart Lung and Blood Institute awarded Ann & Robert H Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago $781,860 on September 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to investigate the novel role of neutrophils in mediating endothelial regeneration and vascular repair in sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The research addresses ARDS pathology, specifically endothelial barrier injury and increased vascular...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Mayo Clinic $661,884 on July 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop lung ultrasound surface wave elastography (LUSWE) as a diagnostic and assessment tool for diffuse pulmonary parenchymal disease. The project aims to develop novel technology analyzing lung mass density and viscoelasticity in addition to surface wave speed to create a noninvasive screening tool for early identification of...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Ann & Robert H Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago $778,202 on September 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to fund research targeting inflammaging-induced endothelial injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) development in aging lungs. The research investigates how aging influences endothelial barrier injury mechanisms in ARDS, with focus on endothelial NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2)...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded $1.775 million to Boston Children's Hospital on September 1, 2026, to investigate pericyte-to-smooth-muscle-cell transitions in pulmonary arterial hypertension, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837). The research addresses excessive vascular remodeling in pulmonary arterial hypertension by examining how pericytes—specialized mural cells that maintain capillary stability—transition into smooth muscle-like cells under...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Medluidics LLC $227,639 on September 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop a cardiopulmonary unit-on-a-chip for investigating right ventricular hypertrophy caused by pulmonary arterial hypertension and for developing targeted treatments. The recipient will develop a microfluidic device that models both the right ventricle and pulmonary artery separated by a collagen layer, enabling culture of...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia $1,068,774 on August 11, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop a cloud-based platform for measuring physical activity via wearable sensors and predicting clinical worsening in pediatric pulmonary hypertension. The project addresses a critical gap in pediatric pulmonary hypertension treatment: pediatric mortality remains near 30% over five years, yet only two...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Vanderbilt University Medical Center $174,621 on August 17, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) techniques for monitoring congenital heart disease using ultra-low field (ULF) MRI systems. The recipient will adapt CMR to an inexpensive, unshielded, open-geometry ULF MRI system and apply machine learning techniques to mitigate hardware limitations and...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Ann & Robert H Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago $438,328 on August 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to support the Pediatric Acute Care Research (PACER) Training Program. The PACER program provides postdoctoral scholars with mentored, experiential research opportunities, didactics, seminars, apprenticeships, and career development experiences in pediatric emergency and critical care medicine....
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia $115,584 on July 3, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to support computational and experimental investigations of deformation-driven molecular pathways in single right ventricle congenital heart disease. The project, a K25 career development award, will fund research into tricuspid valve regurgitation in pediatric patients with single right ventricle congenital heart...
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Ann & Robert H Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago $509,622 on September 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to evaluate novel ultrasound techniques for assessing right ventricular diastolic dysfunction in children with pulmonary arterial hypertension. The project conducts a prospective two-center observational cohort study combining conventional ultrasound and ultrafast ultrasound (UFUS) imaging to characterize three phases of diastole: early relaxation, early filling determined by diastolic suction, and late filling during atrial contraction. Ultrafast ultrasound captures cardiac images at 5,000 to 10,000 frames per second, compared to conventional ultrasound's 25 to 100 frames per second, enabling detection of short-lived and fast-occurring cardiac events. Non-invasive ultrasound measurements will be validated against invasive diastolic pressure measurements obtained during cardiac catheterization. Myocardial tissue properties (fibrosis) and blood flow will be characterized using cardiac MRI T1 mapping and right ventricular 4D flow imaging. The study will develop a non-invasive risk score combining UFUS and MRI measurements to predict outcomes in pediatric pulmonary hypertension patients. Work is performed at the Chicago, Illinois location. The award period runs through May 31, 2030. This is a Project Grant, the standard NIH research funding mechanism for investigator-initiated research.
