This Project Grant award in the amount of $710,899.00 was provided by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research federal grant program (CFDA 93.837), to The Washington University in St. Louis. The goal of this research project is to delineate the short and long-term neurocognitive impact of late-childhood iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in young females. Specifically, the project will evaluate cognitive function and brain structure/connectivity in 88 young females aged 12-21 with IDA, both at the time of diagnosis and after iron repletion therapy, and compare to 44 age-matched females without anemia. The research aims to determine the cerebral metabolic stress caused by late-childhood IDA, the reversibility of neurocognitive dysfunction with iron treatment, and the long-term impact on white matter integrity and cognitive abilities. The findings could have important implications for IDA screening and treatment recommendations during a critical developmental period for young women. The award period runs from August 15, 2024 to July 31, 2028.
