The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) awarded Brigham & Women's Hospital Inc. a $608,944 Project Grant under the Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health (CFDA 93.286) program. The grant funds the development of an AI-assisted strategy for monitoring pulmonary congestion in acute heart failure patients in emergency settings. The project aims to automate lung ultrasound congestion scoring using AI/ML methods and a dataset of heart failure patients, with the goal of improving the measurement of decongestion for acute heart failure patients. Successful completion of this work could change clinical practice by addressing the current limitations of congestion monitoring, including reliability and objectivity issues. As part of the project, an open-source prototype of the AI software for congestion measurement, named Pulmox, would be publicly released for use in future clinical trials for novel decongestion therapies.
