CFRD affects approximately 45% of cystic fibrosis adults and is associated with diabetic complications, increased mortality, and accelerated lung function...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Pittsburgh $1.610 million on September 15, 2025, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate the role of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane receptor (CFTR) in dietary fatty acid transport in the small intestine. The research, led by Principal Investigator Alison B. Kohan and co-investigator C.A. Hodges, will test clinically relevant...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $191,700 on January 11, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate how membrane lipids mediate ciliary signaling in polycystic kidney disease. The research addresses the role of phosphatidylserine, a membrane lipid, in regulating the polycystin complex within the primary cilium. Mutations...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $736,509 on June 24, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The award funds research into novel molecular pathways of renal injury in nephropathic cystinosis, a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the cystinosin (CTNS) gene that results in lyssomal accumulation of cysteine across tissues and...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Rhode Island Hospital $195,370 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct a community-based produce prescription intervention addressing nutrition insecurity and obesity in urban populations. The research will examine the acceptability and feasibility of a produce prescription program through focus groups with patients and healthcare...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The General Hospital Corporation (Massachusetts General Hospital) $749,727 on August 5, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate parathyroid hormone receptor signaling in podocyte injury and chronic kidney disease progression. The funded research will define the pathological role of PTH/PTH1R signaling in podocyte injury, elucidate underlying...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded $1,046,335 to Well Cell Global LLC on August 11, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct a randomized clinical trial examining the metabolic mechanisms underlying Physiologic Insulin Resensitization (PIR) in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. The recipient will enroll 40 subjects—20 receiving PIR and 20 receiving standard of care—over 12 months to evaluate how...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Massachusetts General Hospital $251,626 on April 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct basic research on c-kit receptor signaling in kidney collecting duct function. The research investigates the role of c-kit receptor signaling in modulating collecting duct epithelial cell composition and function. The project uses c-kit "sash" mice...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Vanderbilt University $172,234 on May 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate ceramide synthase 2 (CERS2)–dependent sphingolipid pathways in human pancreatic beta-cell function and resilience in Type 1 Diabetes. The research addresses mechanisms by which disrupted lipid metabolism accelerates beta-cell dysfunction in T1D. The award funds...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Vanderbilt University $140,396 on December 13, 2025, for research investigating the role of PDX1 C-terminal interaction domains during pancreatic endocrine differentiation and proliferation under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The research examines how the homeobox transcription factor PDX1 regulates insulin-producing beta cell development and proliferation in the...
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded Rhode Island Hospital $343,940 on August 31, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct a pilot pre/post interventional clinical trial assessing the efficacy and safety of verapamil in adolescents and adults with cystic fibrosis-related dysglycemia. The trial will enroll 30 adolescents (age >14 years) and adults with cystic fibrosis and abnormal glucose tolerance or early cystic fibrosis-related diabetes not yet requiring insulin therapy. The study will determine whether verapamil, a calcium channel blocker known to downregulate thioredoxin-interacting protein and preserve beta cell function in other diabetes types, improves beta cell function measured by mixed meal tolerance test-stimulated C-peptide area under the curve and reduces dysglycemia assessed via continuous glucose monitoring over a six-month treatment period. The award will also evaluate verapamil's safety and tolerability in this population. Work is performed in Providence, Rhode Island. The period of performance runs from August 31, 2026, through July 31, 2029. This is a Project Grant, an assistance type supporting extramural biomedical research that advances prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetes and kidney diseases.
