- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded Health Research, Inc. (Roswell Park Division) $347,000 on July 8, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to conduct a large-scale population-based study examining how the use of reduced-exposure nicotine products—electronic nicotine products and oral nicotine pouches—impacts oral health conditions among adults who formerly used combustible or smokeless tobacco in the United States. The research...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $666,812 under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) on July 14, 2026, for a multilevel retrospective cohort study examining the impacts of Medicaid dental benefits expansion on oral healthcare workforce composition and services delivery at federally qualified health centers. The research employs an event-study difference-in-differences design using Uniform Data...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded Oregon Health & Science University $557,951 on August 26, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to develop and validate an experimental polymicrobial abscess model system for investigating the role of microbial synergy in oral inflammatory dysbiosis. The research platform uses patient-matched human dental plaque and odontogenic abscess specimens introduced into mice to recapitulate the...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, an operating division of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded Regents of the University of Michigan $600,214 on August 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to define the neuronal basis of odontogenic pain and identify targets for non-opioid analgesic development. The project, led by Dr. Joshua Emrick, investigates the cells, circuits, and behavioral...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston $323,000 on July 9, 2026, to model causal mediation by dental care and predict jaw osteonecrosis risk in bisphosphonate users under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121). The research addresses a critical clinical gap in managing osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ)—a debilitating adverse event marked by exposed necrotic bone, persistent infection, and...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded the University of Arizona $371,900 on August 3, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to develop innovative methods for evidence synthesis in oral health research. The project addresses barriers in current oral health evidence synthesis by developing oral-health-specific artificial intelligence tools, methodological resources, and analytical approaches. Aim 1 validates and adapts AI tools...
- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, within the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded the University of Illinois $320,660 on July 9, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to develop anionic nanohybrid aggregate formulations for early childhood caries prevention. The project addresses early childhood caries affecting approximately 25 percent of American preschool children, particularly those of...
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research awarded Chestnut Health Systems Inc. $606,406 on September 1, 2026, under the Oral Diseases and Disorders Research program (CFDA 93.121) to conduct observational research assessing the prolonged effects of medications for opioid use disorder on oral health. The research follows a sequential explanatory mixed methods study design guided by an oral health disparities framework adapted to include opioid use disorder treatment and recovery constructs such as treatment adherence, recovery capital, and stigma. The study seeks to identify potential factors underlying the onset and progression of oral disease associated with dissolvable buprenorphine and methadone; understand the contribution of environmental and behavioral factors to oral disease among patients receiving these medications; and determine how potential oral disease might be mitigated during medication-assisted treatment. The research will examine the relationships between patients' access to dental care and opioid use disorder treatment and recovery. The study is set at a federally qualified health center with integrated medication-assisted treatment, dental, and subordinate services in Chicago, Illinois. The project runs from September 1, 2026, through May 31, 2031. This award is assistance type Project Grant through NIDCR's extramural research program supporting basic, translational, and clinical research in dental, oral, and craniofacial health and disease.
