The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) awarded a $141,470 Project Grant under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to MOI University College Of Health Sciences in Kenya. The objective of this 5-year project is to study the efficacy of next-generation insecticidal bed nets (PBO-LLINs) for malaria control in rural western Kenya. The project will leverage an existing longitudinal cohort of over 500 people to monitor changes in LLIN use, malaria vector populations, and malaria infections before and after the introduction of PBO-LLINs. Researchers will collect quantitative data on factors impacting PBO-LLIN effectiveness, including human behavior, insecticide resistance, and mosquito feeding patterns. The findings are expected to inform future deployment of next-generation LLINs and complementary interventions to maximize their public health impact in sub-Saharan Africa.
