About this award

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) awarded the Woodlawn Conservancy Inc. a Project Grant of $345,539 under the Promotion of the Humanities Division of Preservation and Access program (CFDA 45.149) to develop a comprehensive catalog of stained glass windows housed within the family mausoleums at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York. The project, which commenced September 1, 2025, and will conclude by August 31, 2028, builds upon a condition survey and research initiative conducted from 2019 to 2025 by a multidisciplinary team of conservators, art historians, and research historians. The deliverable will be an integrated online catalog documenting and attributing approximately 1,200 stained glass windows created predominantly by unknown artisans during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, thereby establishing intellectual access to this significant American cultural resource and advancing conservation and appreciation of American stained glass heritage.

This award exemplifies the NEH program's priority of providing free, public access to digitized humanities materials and strengthening institutional stewardship of collections within America's cultural institutions. The catalog will be incorporated into the Woodlawn Conservancy's website to ensure broad accessibility and support ongoing interpretation and conservation efforts for what constitutes the nation's largest collection of free-standing family mausoleums and their associated decorative arts.
