The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded a $349,524 Project Grant under its Promotion of the Humanities Division of Preservation and Access program (CFDA 45.149) to the Yivo Institute for Jewish Research, a non-profit organization. The grant supports a 3-year project to process, digitize, and provide online access to 122 linear feet of records from four major 20th century American labor union collections held in Yivo's Jewish Labor and Political Archives. These collections, which include records from the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union, Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, United Hebrew Trades, and Jewish Labor Committee, illuminate the history of Jewish immigrant workers and the labor movement. Through this project, Yivo will hire staff to digitize thousands of documents, photographs, scrapbooks, and other materials, create metadata, and make the digital assets available to researchers, scholars, and the public.
