The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded $220,146 to the Education & Early Development Alaska Department, Administrative Services Division on November 1, 2026 under the Promotion of the Humanities Division of Preservation and Access program (CFDA 45.149). The award supports the "Foundations of Statehood: Alaska's Constitutional Development and the Process of Self-Determination and Full Representation" project, operating through October 31, 2028 and performed in Alaska.
The Alaska State Archives will process, describe, transcribe, and digitize archival records documenting Alaska's constitutional development and transition from U.S. territory to statehood. The project will make previously inaccessible collections discoverable to researchers, educators, and the public. The recipient will produce a comprehensive topical guide situating Alaska's experience within broader traditions of constitutional governance and federal expansion to support comparative study of American state formation. The project will also develop standards-aligned lesson plans for secondary educators using newly accessible records to promote civic and primary source literacy.
