About this award
The National Park Service (NPS) awarded $581,258 to the State of North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources on September 24, 2025, under the Battlefield Land Acquisition Grants program (CFDA 15.928) to facilitate the permanent preservation of the 69.69-acre Britt-Halliwell II Tract located at Bentonville Battlefield in North Carolina. The American Battlefield Trust served as the subrecipient and executed the property acquisition. The grant supports the protection of this Civil War battlefield land through a conservation easement mechanism, with the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources holding the permanent easement to ensure restricted use, development, and conversion of the property while maintaining public access.
This award exemplifies the federal grant program's core mission to assist state and local governments in acquiring and permanently protecting threatened Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War battlefield lands. All grants under CFDA 15.928 require a dollar-for-dollar non-federal match, ensuring shared financial commitment to preservation efforts. The acquisition is subject to a Preservation Letter of Agreement that establishes the permanent preservation covenant and public access requirements, thereby safeguarding the historic battlefield from future development and converting it into a protected public resource. The project has an ultimate completion date of September 30, 2028.
