About this award
Essex County received a $100,000 Project Grant from the Department of the Interior's National Park Service (NPS) under the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network program (CFDA 15.930), effective September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2026. The award funds the Essex County Mural Trail project, which will create a series of public murals throughout Essex County, Virginia that showcase the region's natural beauty, rich history, and connection to the Chesapeake Bay. This public art initiative transforms public spaces into vibrant cultural landmarks while serving as an economic development tool aligned with the county's tourism plan.
The project supports the NPS Chesapeake Bay Initiative Act mandate to identify, conserve, restore, and interpret natural, recreational, historical, and cultural resources within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. By leveraging artistic interpretation and community engagement, the Essex County Mural Trail is designed to boost local tourism, support area businesses, strengthen community pride, and enhance public access to and education about the Chesapeake Bay's resources. The initiative exemplifies the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network's focus on linking heritage preservation, environmental education, and tourism-driven economic development in gateway communities.
