Description
This nagpra documentation and consultation project is an anticipated 24-month collaborative effort between thesan diego museum of man, DBA museum of US (MOU), and the paymkawichum nations (our project partners) to support and incorporate native knowledge and perspective in the identification, documentation, and cultural affiliation of MOU-held nagpra-eligible cultural resources and ancestral human remains for repatriation. The primary goals of this project are to 1) conduct a thorough review of the mous archeological holdingsexcavated from SAN diego, riverside, orange, ventura, and LOS angeles county areas that fall within theaboriginal territory of the paymkawichum nations, and 2) submit new notices and inventories of potential nagpra material from archeological site excavations in SAN diego, riverside, orange, ventura, and LOS angeles counties. We will initiate review and consultation of non-archaeology derived cultural resources that may fall into categories of sacred or cultural patrimony. An ancillary goal of this project, as identified by paymkawichum representatives, is (1) to lay groundwork for collaborative conversations about non-nagpra repatriations, (2) future consented stewardship at MOU, and (3) the development and implementation of educational and research access policies. In order to accomplish these goals, we will: 1) partner with paymkawichum tribal cultural resource MONITORS (MONITORS) and community consultants to incorporate native perspective, evidence, and tradition in the determination of associated and unassociated funerary objects, sacred items, and objects of cultural patrimony 2) continue to strengthen the collaborative relationship between MOU and the paymkawichum nations 3) crossreference archeological holdings for at least 75 sites, documenting field notes, site files, and MOU source files 4) conduct a visual inspection of physical collections to ensure that any previously missed nagpraeligible items or ancestral remains are identified for repatriation, including a review of faunal remains to identify any potentially misidentified human remains 5) ensure safe storage and quality inventory management of all archaeological cultural resources regardless of nagpra status. The housing conditions of some of mous archeologically-derived collections have been a longstanding concern of the paymkawichum nations. Improved housing of these cultural resources will ensure proper and respectful care and handling, and enable access to items by tribal communities during future consultation, teaching, and research efforts. Outcomeas a result of this project, we will finalize review of sites falling within paymkawichum traditionalterritories and initiate review of sites that may fall within shared traditional territories betweenpaymkawichum and other native american communities.
