The National Park Service, through its American Battlefield Protection Program (CFDA 15.926), awarded a $108,660.84 Project Grant to the University of North Alabama (UNA) on September 20, 2024. The grant will support the development of a Civil War interpretive trail through the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area, with one tour stop in each of the 6 counties included in the heritage area. Additionally, the funding will be used to draft a National Register of Historic Places nomination for the Fort Henderson site in Athens, Alabama. This project, titled "The Tennessee River and the Civil War in Northwest Alabama," aims to identify, evaluate, interpret, and protect historic battlefields and sites associated with armed conflicts on American soil through non-acquisition projects and activities.
