About this award
The Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention awarded Monster Soup Society $125,000 on July 1, 2026, under the Drug-Free Communities Support Program Grants (CFDA 93.276).
Monster Soup Society will reduce substance use among Oklahoma County middle and high school youth through a multi-sector coalition strategy. The Monster Soup Society Coalition comprises a youth core with its own strategic action plan supported by a Multi-Sector Support Team (MSST) layer representing all 12 Drug-Free Communities sectors. The coalition will support implementation of the youth strategic action plan by leveraging multi-sector organizational relationships and resources, and will develop a parallel strategic action plan addressing parent, guardian, system, and organizational behavior to decrease risk and increase protection against youth substance use. The project targets reductions of 5 percent in youth alcohol use, 3 percent in marijuana use, and 3 percent in tobacco use. The coalition will identify and monitor multiple risk and protective factors to achieve positive change in youth populations.
The award runs through June 30, 2031. Place of performance is listed as South Dakota, USA. The DFC Support Program establishes and strengthens collaborations among communities, public and private nonprofit agencies, and federal, state, local, and tribal governments to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth 18 years of age and younger.
Description
Population of focus: this project will focus on reducing substance use among oklahoma county middle and high school youth with widespread strategies aimed at both youth and adults (as influencers of youth behavior) in this community. Strategies and interventions: the monster soup society coalition is made up of a strong youth core with its own strategic action plan and committees. This core is surrounded by the msst layer which includes representatives from each of the DFC 12 sectors. Through this DFC project, the msst will do two things: 1. Support the implementation of the youth strategic action plan by allowing youth to leverage multi-sector organizational relationships and resources to achieve their goals, and 2. Develop their own strategic action plan to address parent/guardian, system, and organizational behavior in order to decrease risk and increase protection against youth substance use. Purpose and outcomes: our project has 2 goals. DFC goal 1: support community coalitions that work to prevent and reduce substance use among youth 18 years and younger by establishing and strengthening collaboration among communities, public and private nonprofit agencies, and federal, state, local, and tribal governments. Our priority substances include youth alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco use which we aim to reduce by 5%, 3%, and 3%, respectively. Goal 2: reduce substance use among youth and, over time, reduce substance use among adults by: addressing the factors in a community that increases the risk of substance use and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance use. The coalition has identified multiple risk and protective factors which IT will be addressing and monitoring in order to achieve positive change in youth populations.
