Description

Safe in harlem is a teen-led, community partnership supported, DFC grantee dedicated to the erradication of substance misuse among teens, youth, and young adults in the inner city of harlem, NY. - safe in harlem is a DFC award grantee from 2015-2020. In 2021, amidst the pandemic and a lapse in funding, we continued to deliver 2 ebps to over 40 parents, educated 5 community legislators, and engaged with over 400 teens to address some of the health (addiction and overdoses) and socio-economic disparities (food, healthcare and shelter) which are prevalent in the community of harlem. This application is a roadmap to continuing to build a drug-free coalition of teens and youth capable of self-directed community-level change for generations to come. IT focuses on engagement with more than 400 black and latinx youth annually, and their guardians, to disrupt social norms, structural racism in health and educational systems, and to address socio-economic conditions such as joblessness and homelessness. Our aim is to use the capacity we have, and continue to build, to change community norms around alcohol and marijuana use through the following: monthly universal media campaigns which educate and inform, parenting skills enhancement and vocational trainings to increase employment and home connectedness, enhance access to drug-free activities for teens to reduce misuse, reduction of access to availability of alcohol in the community, incentivize bodega owners to reduce sales of alcohol to teens, create murals and reduce alcohol advertisements to change the physical environment. The preceding aims and goals are expected to reduce use by 10-15% per year over the next 5-years of funding, which is predicted to reduce adult use overtime.
