About this award
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded Weathervane Labs LLC $190,000 on September 1, 2026, through the NOAA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program (CFDA 11.021) to establish feasibility for Seasonable, an event-based weather software-as-a-service platform. Seasonable will deliver tailored weather intelligence and decision support to both outdoor event organizers and attendees through a unified platform, integrating public and commercial weather APIs with Weathervane's thermal comfort modeling. The Phase I project will validate the concept through proof-of-principle testing at two outdoor events, evaluating technical feasibility for delivering synchronized weather intelligence to both user groups. The work addresses mounting community risks from extreme temperatures and related cascading hazards including deteriorated air quality and public health impacts. Seasonable integrates NOAA's focus areas in data and cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and citizen science, and aligns with NOAA's goals to reduce injuries and deaths while building a more resilient economy. Work is performed in Minnetonka, Minnesota, with a completion date of February 26, 2027.
Description
In this phase i project, we will establish feasibility for seasonable, an event-based weather software-as-a-service with the novel capability to provide tailored weather intelligence for both outdoor event organizers and attendees. As communities face mounting risks from extreme temperatures triggering cascading hazards like deteriorating air quality and public health impacts, people continue gathering outdoors. Event organizers and attendees are each decision makers preparing for and adapting to extreme weather. Although event organizers and attendees are inextricably linked, existing products and services typically address one group to the exclusion of the other. Seasonable will integrate public and commercial weather apis with weathervane's proven thermal comfort modeling to deliver tailored forecasts and decision support to both groups through a unified platform. We will validate our concept through proof-of-principle testing for two outdoor events, evaluating the technical feasibility of delivering synchronized weather intelligence to both organizers and attendees. Seasonable integrates NOAA's science and technology focus areas, including data and cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and citizen science. The innovation aligns with NOAA's goals to reduce injuries and deaths while building a more resilient economy.
