Description

The primary goal of the proposal is to halt the continued decline of the endangered main hawaiian islands insular false killer whale (MHI FKW, pseudorca crassidens) population through management and research. DAR and the university of hawaii health and stranding lab (UHHSL), with the help of a contracted research partner, will research MHI FKW demographics, reproductive and stress hormones, prey, diving patterns, and spatial distribution. DAR will work with fishers to understand more about interactions with MHI FKW and conduct targeted outreach with ocean users, particularly recreational and commercial fishers, to boost citizen science knowledge and sharing.
