Description
This proposal will fall under priority #1B: necropsies and diagnostics, particularly for the southeast region, to enhance capabilities to rapidly perform thorough necropsies on dead-stranded marine mammals in good condition before carcass degradation - particularly during large whale stranding events, mass strandings, human interaction events (e.g., potential gunshot or entangled animals), and episodic stranding, entanglement or mortality events. Enhance capabilities to perform diagnostic tests on dead-stranded marine mammals. This may include analyzing previously collected tissue samples that are currently archived. This proposal will also fall under priority #4A: educate public, to provide outreach to educate the community about marine mammals, safe viewing, human interaction, and managing public expectations for stranding response. The primary objectives of the project are to (1) to continue to maintain stranding response for the south carolina and (2) to provide educational outreach to the community about marine mammals and the threats they face. The lowcountry marine mammal network (lmmn) is the only authorized state coordinator for all marine mammal strandings in south carolina. We work closely with the national ocean service/hollings marine laboratory (NOS/HML) and collectively we make up the south carolina marine mammal stranding network (scmmsn). This proposal is exclusively for lmmn.
