Project Grant NA25NMFX407G0015
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Atlantic Coastal Fisheries Cooperative Management Act (CFDA 11.474) will provide $179,436.00 to the New Hampshire Fish & Game department to conduct critical fisheries monitoring and research activities. The grant, with a performance period from April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2030, will support sea sampling aboard New Hampshire lobster boats, continued lobster harvester and dealer reporting,...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded the University System of New Hampshire a $228,579 cooperative agreement under the Sea Grant Support federal grant program (CFDA 11.417) from September 1, 2023 through August 31, 2026. Under this award, UNH will partner with other Sea Grant programs and stakeholders to continue regional engagement on issues related to the American lobster fishery. Key activities include supporting a fisheries roundtable series with New Hampshire...
- This $167,311 Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Sea Grant Support (CFDA 11.417) program, supports a project to comprehensively evaluate methods for estimating size at maturity in crustacean species, such as lobsters, crabs, and shrimp, which are crucial to the management of valuable U.S. fisheries. The project aims to identify all previous studies using morphometric data to model crustacean size at maturity, conduct...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Sea Grant Support program (CFDA 11.417) provides $2,175,631 to the University of Maine System to design and implement collaborative research, extension, and outreach activities to address emerging priorities impacting the American lobster fishing industry in the Northeast region. The key activities include: (1) co-developing communication strategies and deliverables to share previous...
- This Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Sea Grant Support program (CFDA 11.417), provides $310,043 in funding from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2026. The overarching goal is to integrate socioeconomic indicators of resilience into the American lobster stock assessment process, evaluate the socioeconomic implications of past regulatory changes on the fishing fleet, create a rapid-response system to share research findings...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded a $417,022 cooperative agreement to Stony Brook University from September 2021 through August 2023 under the Sea Grant Support program (CFDA 11.417). The university will evaluate the impacts of changing life history parameters on American lobster stock dynamics under different management regulations and in a warming Northeastern United States environment. As part of the Sea Grant Support program's goals of supporting marine resources...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Interjurisdictional Fisheries Act of 1986 (CFDA 11.407) enables the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) to effectively implement the state's lobster fishery management plan. The $198,076 award, effective October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2029, supports the collection and analysis of biological data on the lobster stock and landed lobster in Rhode Island. This...
- This $25,250,000 Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Cooperative Research Program (CFDA 11.472), aims to inform research for improved fishing gear modifications and management decisions to reduce the regulatory burden on the American lobster and Jonah crab fisheries, while maintaining lower risk levels for the North Atlantic right whale. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) will work with Atlantic states to...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $240,408 Cooperative Agreement under the Sea Grant Support program (CFDA 11.417) to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) to conduct research on ecological and physical processes in surface convergences, which serve as critical microhabitats for the American lobster. The key objectives are to: 1) Resolve the hydrographic structure of convergences to better understand the dynamics of these microhabitats where lobster...
- The Commercial Fisheries Research Foundation (CFRF) was awarded a $194,983 Project Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Fisheries Development and Utilization Research and Development Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program (CFDA 11.427). The grant will support CFRF's Lobster and Jonah Crab Research Fleet from April 1, 2021 through March 31, 2023. The Research Fleet is a collaborative fishing vessel approach that will address data needs for the...
A PORT SAMPLING PROGRAM FOR AMERICAN LOBSTER BEGAN IN 2005 AND DATA FROM THIS PROGRAM HAVE BEEN UTILIZED IN STOCK ASSESSMENTS. THERE IS CURRENTLY A LACK OF BIOLOGICAL DATA FOR LOBSTER FROM OFFSHORE STATISTICAL MANAGEMENT AREAS AND DATA COLLECTED FROM THIS PROGRAM HAS HELPED FILL SOME OF THOSE DATA GAPS. SAMPLING FOR OTHER SPECIES INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, JONAH CRABS, NORTHERN SHRIMP, ATLANTIC HERRING, AND ATLANTIC MENHADEN HAS OCCURRED AS THE NEED HAS ARISEN. DATA COLLECTED ON THESE SPECIES WILL BE USED IN POPULATION ASSESSMENTS AND TO ADDRESS ANY PERTINENT QUESTIONS THAT MAY ARISE (E.G., SPAWNING SEASON AND SIZE AT MATURITY). ALL DATA COLLECTED UNDER THIS GRANT WILL BE SUBMITTED TO THE ASMFC FOR USE IN STOCK ASSESSMENTS AND OTHER ANALYSES. NEW HAMPSHIRE HAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE COASTWIDE AMERICAN LOBSTER SETTLEMENT INDEX (ALSI) SINCE 2008. SAMPLING OF YOY LOBSTERS HAS PROVEN TO BE A GOOD INDICATOR OF SUBSEQUENT JUVENILE AND ADULT POPULATION LEVELS, AND HAS BECOME A CRITICAL SURVEY IN POPULATION ASSESSMENTS. DATA FROM THE NH PORTION OF THIS SURVEY WILL BE USED IN COMBINATION WITH OTHER STATES TO BETTER UNDERSTAND POPULATION DYNAMICS OF THIS VALUABLE RESOURCE.
