TITLE: AN INTERDISCIPLINARY MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION COLLABORATIVE FURTHERING THE COASTAL RESILIENCY OF LONG ISLAND SOUND OVERVIEW: THIS PROJECT WILL TEACH TEACHERS AND STUDENTS FUNDAMENTAL FIELD-SURVEY TECHNIQUES FOR MONITORING CLIMATE CHANGE AND ANTHROPOGENIC IMPACTS ON LONG ISLAND SOUND COASTAL COMMUNITIES. DURING THIS PROJECT PERIOD 5-7 TEACHERS AND OVER 50 STUDENTS FROM NEW HAVEN, CT AND GUILFORD, CT WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN SEVERAL FIELD METHODOLOGIES FOR MONITORING ARTIFICIAL REEFS/LIVING SHORELINES, BIODIVERSITY, AND COASTAL EROSION. STUDENTS WILL THEN BE EMPOWERED TO DEVELOP COASTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION PLAN CAPSTONE PROJECTS THAT WILL REINFORCE A BLUE ECONOMY AND BUILD LOCAL CLIMATE RESILIENCY. THIS PROJECT WILL ALLOW STUDENTS AND TEACHERS TO WORK DIRECTLY WITH RESEARCHERS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF COASTAL OBSERVATION AND FIELD DATA COLLECTION PROTOCOLS AND STUDENT RESEARCH STRATEGIES FOR DISSEMINATION AND IMPLEMENTATION, AND FOR CONSIDERATION FOR INCLUSION IN BOTH NOAAS EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE COLLECTION, AND THE GLOBAL LEARNING AND OBSERVATION TO BENEFIT THE ENVIRONMENT (GLOBE) PROGRAM. THIS RECOMMENDATION IS CONTINGENT UPON THE APPLICANT PROVIDING LETTERS OF COMMITMENT FROM SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS OF THE SCHOOLS LISTED AS PROJECT PARTNERS.
