The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $101,000 two-year Project Grant under the NOAA Mission-Related Education Awards program (CFDA 11.008) to the Pontchartrain Conservancy, a non-profit organization. The purpose of the FLOW (Facilitating Literacy of Watersheds) project is to provide a high-quality, local watershed curriculum and educational experiences to teachers and students in underserved rural communities, including those disproportionately impacted by environmental issues, such as Plaquemines Parish. Over the course of the project, up to 20 teachers from four parishes will be recruited and supported to adapt and implement the FLOW curriculum, which incorporates Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEEs), including outdoor field experiences, investigations, and student-led stewardship projects. This effort is expected to reach up to 1,000 middle and high school students in these underserved communities.
