- Marine Advanced Robotics, Inc. was awarded a $300,000 Project Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration under the NOAA Small Business Innovation Research Program to further develop collaborative algorithms for autonomous swarming of uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs). The company's Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel technology provides a family of portable, foldable and energy-efficient USVs that can rapidly deploy and map predefined survey areas without existing infrastructure....
- This $304,963 SBIR Phase I project, awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program, aims to develop a constellation of small, high-altitude balloons for improved atmospheric data collection. The key product is a global network of long-duration, low-cost, lightweight weather balloons that can significantly reduce weather forecast uncertainty by filling data gaps over oceans and undersampled regions. The project's broader...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $1,299,988 Project Grant under its Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program to Space Balloon Technologies Corp, doing business as Spaceloon. The grant supports the development of Spaceloon's novel Controlled Altitude Ballooning (CAB) platform, which can perform bi-directional sampling across atmospheric layers from the troposphere to the mesosphere. The CAB technology involves a hardware and software combination that...
- This SBIR Phase I Project Grant, awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program, is funding the development of an autonomous unmanned aerial system (UAS) designed to monitor coastal erosion with high precision. The $305,000 award to Prime Pacific Enterprises LLC (doing business as Hawaii Pacific Drone Solutions) supports the creation of a control system that combines path planning, sensor-based position estimation, and...
- This $5,500,000 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), under the Congressionally-Identified Projects program (CFDA 11.617), aims to increase knowledge about local weather systems in the lower atmosphere. The key activities include: Developing a method to standardize and trace commercial UAS and advanced air mobility (AAM) atmospheric measurements, as well as protocols and standards for the Unmanned Aircraft Meteorological Data Report. Evaluating...
PURPOSE: TECHNICAL ABSTRACT: THE PROJECT TEAM WILL DESIGN AND BUILD A PROTOTYPE, JAIABOT - STORM, WHICH IS AIR-DEPLOYABLE TO COLLECT ATMOSPHERIC DATA FROM THE LAUNCH POINT (3048 M) TO THE SEA SURFACE COLLECTING WIND SPEED, HUMIDITY, AND TEMPERATURE DATA, AND THEN COLLECT UPPER OCEAN DATA INCLUDING TEMPERATURE AND SALINITY TO DEPTH AND SURFACE CURRENT VECTORS AND WAVE HEIGHTS. THE DATA COLLECTED WILL BE COMMUNICATED WIRELESSLY VIA SATELLITE COMMS FOR USE BY AGENCIES SUCH AS THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TO AID THE PREDICTION OF STORM ENTITIES AND DIRECTION OF TRAVEL. DEPLOYING MULTIPLE JAIABOTS TO FORM A PICKET LINE ALONG THE FORECASTED HURRICANE TRACK IN FRONT OF THE APPROACHING TROPICAL STORM BOUNDARY WILL PROVIDE RESEARCHERS WITH THE DATA NEEDED TO VISUALIZE THE SPATIAL VARIABILITY OF OCEAN FEATURES AND ENERGY TRANSFER OVER A WIDE AREA AND THE IMPACTS OF FRESHWATER OCEAN LAYERS ON TEMPERATURE TRANSFER AS THE STORM INTENSITY INCREASES. FIVE JAIABOT PROTOTYPES WILL BE PRODUCED TO SUPPORT VERIFICATION AND VALIDATION OF THE DESIGN, INCLUDING AIR LAUNCH DEMONSTRATION, WATER ENTRY SURVIVABILITY, ATMOSPHERIC AND AQUATIC DATA COLLECTION. JAIA WILL PREPARE FOR A LAUNCH FROM A NOAA AIRCRAFT WORKING WITH THE TEAM AT THE AIRCRAFT OPERATIONS CENTER (AOC) SUMMARY OF ANTICIPATED RESULTS: FIVE JAIABOT PROTOTYPES WILL BE PRODUCED. JAIA WILL PREPARE FOR A LAUNCH FROM A NOAA AIRCRAFT WORKING WITH THE TEAM AT THE AIRCRAFT OPERATIONS CENTER (AOC) TO VALIDATE THE DESIGN, INCLUDING AIR LAUNCH DEMONSTRATION, WATER ENTRY SURVIVABILITY, ATMOSPHERIC AND AQUATIC DATA COLLECTION. PROSPECTIVE JAIA CUSTOMERS HAVE PROVIDED POSITIVE FEEDBACK ON THE UTILITY OF AN AIR LAUNCHABLE JAIABOT. THE UK MET OFFICE, ESSO - INDIAN NATIONAL CENTRE FOR OCEAN INFORMATION SERVICES, AND AUSTRALIAS BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY (BOM) VALUE SIMILAR OCEAN/ATMOSPHERIC DATA. IN ADDITION, THE US DOD IS MANDATED TO DEFINE AND APPLY THE ENVIRONMENT, FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN TO THE STARS, TO ENSURE THE U.S. NAVY HAS THE FREEDOM OF ACTION TO DETER AGGRESSION, MAINTAIN FREEDOM OF THE SEAS AND WIN WARS. NAVO, JAIAS BIGGEST SINGLE CUSTOMER, SUPPORTS AIR LAUNCHING JAIA BOTS TO COLLECT DATA. THE USMC HAS A STATED DESIRE TO AIRDROP JAIABOTS FOR BATTLESPACE SHAPING, LITTORAL MANEUVER AND ISR COLLECTION OPERATIONS. THERE ARE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADOPTION WORLDWIDE WITH MILITARIES AND SECURITY / DEFENSE FORCES. THE JAIABOTS OPEN-SOURCE SOFTWARE AND MODULARITY ENABLES NEW SENSORS TO BE EASILY INTEGRATED AND BEHAVIORS CONFIGURED TO SOLVE MANY DIFFERENT PROBLEMS FOR A WIDE RANGE OF CUSTOMERS, DOMESTICALLY AND OVERSEAS.
