This Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the NOAA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program (CFDA 11.021) provides $1,300,000 to Linespect LLC to develop the HABCamera, an artificial intelligence-enhanced system for early detection and monitoring of harmful algal blooms (HABs). The HABCamera combines light sources, lenses, cameras, and sensors to automatically identify and count HAB specimens, while also measuring environmental...
Elder Research Inc. received a $149,992 Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration through the Small Business Innovation Research Program to develop HABssed, a portable, reliable, and low-cost pipeline for detecting harmful algal blooms in the field using third generation sequencing with the Oxford Nanopore Minion device. The company will demonstrate the efficacy of this approach by sequencing existing environmental DNA samples collected from Lake Erie before,...
This National Science Foundation (NSF) Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) Project Grant of $275,000 awarded to Reset Water LLC supports the development of an innovative electrochemical technology to remove harmful algal blooms (HABs) from bodies of water. The project aims to create a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and environmentally-friendly solution to intercept and eliminate HABs, which pose significant risks to aquatic life, human health, and water resources. The Phase...
This Project Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Small Business Innovation Research Program totaling $150,000 will support the development of rapid diagnostic tests for the parasitic infection Amyloodinium ocellatum in fish. Live Advantage Bait, LLC dba Totally Pelagic will utilize next generation approaches to produce highly specific monoclonal antibodies for A. ocellatum dinospores and develop a lateral flow-based rapid diagnostic test. The NOAA SBIR program...
Tridentis Advanced Marine Vehicles LLC and the Watershed Innovation Laboratory at Washington College will develop technology and monitoring solutions for near-shore aquaculture installations under a $149,865 project grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Specifically, the awardees will establish baseline water quality and shellfish testing for aquaculture farms, then develop an efficient and cost-effective material solution to continuously monitor environmental...
This Cooperative Agreement award, totaling $2,395,822, was granted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) Federal Grant Program (CFDA 11.012). The overarching goal of the project is to enable robust real-time monitoring of harmful algal blooms (HABs) via satellite-based telemetry. The award supports the extension of the Phyto-ARM open-source platform, which integrates diverse sensors, movement devices, and edge AI...
Coastaloceanvision Inc. was awarded a $300,000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Project Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to develop a novel surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technology for rapidly detecting and quantifying human pathogens in seafood. The SERS technology uses a higher energy laser wavelength, an innovative mixture of silver-coated nanoparticles, and a fiber optic probe designed for direct use on seafood tissues and environmental...
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $1,849,288 Cooperative Agreement to The Ocean Foundation under the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) Federal Grant Program (CFDA 11.012). The purpose of this 3-year project is to advance technology for low-cost and portable monitoring of ocean acidification, particularly in the US Caribbean region. Key activities include: Developing the "PCO2 to Go" - a handheld sensor system that can cost-effectively measure...

Under the award, Syntro TEK will develop quantitative water test strips fortified with standards, a...

PURPOSE: HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS (HABS) ARE CAUSED BY OVERGROWTH OF ALGAE IN OCEANS AND RIVERS. THEY RELEASE DANGEROUS TOXINS, AFFECT REAL-ESTATE PRICES, AND KILL MARINE LIFE/POISON SHELLFISH. THIS COSTS $17B ANNUALLY IN ECONOMIC DAMAGE. OCEAN MONITORING FOR HABS USES SATELLITES, BUT THESE CANNOT SEE SOME TYPES OF HABS AGAINST THE BACKGROUND OF NATURAL ALGAE UNTIL THEY ARE WELL DEVELOPED/ALREADY DANGEROUS. THEY ALSO DONT WORK WELL NEAR SHORELINES WHERE HUMANS ENCOUNTER HABS. OUR SOLUTION TO THIS IS OCEANALGAETRACKER (OAT), A SENSOR BUOY THAT WILL BE CAPABLE OF MEASURING THE LEVELS OF THE 5 MAJOR GROUPS OF ALGAE INDEPENDENTLY BY FLUORESCENCE. THIS WILL ALLOW OAT TO DETECT HABS EARLIER AND WILL HELP CORRECT SATELLITE DATA. OAT WILL BE LOW COGS (~$3000), LIGHT (10LBS), EASY TO SET UP AND WILL HAVE SOPHISTICATED ANTI-BIOFOULING SYSTEMS. IT WILL BE DESIGNED TO MINIMISE RECALIBRATION AND TO BE HOT SWAPPABLE WITH A NEW UNIT INSTEAD OF DOING MAINTENANCE ON THE WATER, REDUCING COSTS AS A SINGLE BOAT CAN SWAP-OUT DOZENS OF UNITS. IT WILL COMMUNICATE WITH SHORE VIA SATELLITE CONNECTION AND BE SOLAR POWERED. CUSTOMERS IN WATER REMEDIATION, TRIBAL, MUNICIPAL, AND STATE OCEAN MONITORING AGENCIES ARE THE TARGET MARKET AND HAVE EXPRESSED INTEREST.
