The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $350,000 SBIR (CFDA 11.021) Project Grant to Marinesitu Inc., a small disadvantaged business, to develop a low-cost, unmanned underwater survey system for marine environment assessment. The project aims to create a complete system, including a stereo camera-enabled remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and AI-powered software for automated detection of coral bleaching, invasive species, and fish diversity assessments. This innovative system is designed to significantly improve the resolution, accuracy, and data processing efficiency for benthic marine surveys, addressing the limitations of current survey methods. The project will involve paired surveys with the new ROV system and traditional dive methods, with the collected data used to train machine learning models for object detection, 3D positioning, and 3D reconstruction. The validated AI-enabled software is expected to provide a low-cost, unmanned solution for a variety of marine monitoring applications, including fisheries assessment, aquaculture management, ecotourism, and disaster assessments.
