The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $350,000 SBIR grant to Ionicscale LLC, a small technology company, to develop a submersible enclosure and novel membrane inlet sampling interface for their compact, portable mass spectrometry-based chemical analyzers. These instruments have applications in environmental monitoring, personalized medicine, food safety, forensics, and more. The funding will enable the design and prototyping of systems to enable in-situ, underwater deployment of Ionicscale's first-generation mass analyzers. By the end of the Phase I effort, Ionicscale plans to have a functional enclosure and sampling system capable of interfacing with their instruments, as well as identified industry partners to support further development. This research aims to produce enhanced leak detection for offshore oil and gas, as well as capabilities for monitoring toxic chemicals and ocean ecosystems.
