- Transcend Engineering and Technology, LLC was awarded a $181,395 Project Grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture within the Department of Agriculture under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program. The grant aims to develop a spatially dense, multi-level soil moisture sensor using commodity radio frequency electronic components to infer soil water content from dielectric properties. Phase I will determine feasibility and quantify tradeoffs between accuracy and...
- This $250,000 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Information and Intelligent Systems, under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070), will fund the development of a multi-modal integrated sensor system and through-the-soil wireless power transmission technique for continuous, real-time monitoring of soil variables over time and space. A collaboration between Tennessee Technological University, the University of Tennessee...
- This National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program Project Grant award, with a total funding of $649,991, was made to Transcend Engineering And Technology, LLC (doing business as Transcend Engineering) to greatly reduce the cost of monitoring soil water content in highly resolved vertical profiles. The goal is to promote increased adoption of more efficient water management tools in permanent agriculture. The new multi-level soil...
- This $255,663 National Science Foundation Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships project grant funds the development of cosmic ray neutron sensing technology for precision soil moisture measurement by Silverside Detectors Inc. The company aims to address water scarcity challenges in agriculture through an automated, non-invasive soil moisture monitoring system with sub-field resolution. The system would provide irrigation zone-specific soil moisture data to enable optimized water use. This...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $282,000 Project Grant to Iowa State University under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships federal grant program (CFDA 47.084) to develop soil nutrient and moisture monitoring probe sensors. The university will advance sensors for agricultural monitoring by designing probes integrated with sensors to continuously monitor soil nitrogen, salinity, and moisture levels throughout corn crop cycles up to four months. The probes aim to optimize...
- This three-year project grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) totaling $398,998 will support the development of a multi-modal integrated sensor system and through-the-soil wireless power transmission technique for continuous monitoring of soil variables. The Research Foundation for the State University of New York at Buffalo will receive the funding and collaborate with Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee Knoxville on this research under the NSF's...
- This $300,000 federal Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program (CFDA 47.070) supports the development of a sustainable, intelligent wearable sensor system for continuous tree health monitoring. The primary goals are to: Create a biocompatible, ion-sensitive sensor array that can be implanted in a plant's xylem to continuously monitor water and nutrient uptake in real-time. Develop energy-harvesting techniques...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Program (CFDA 47.070) Project Grant award totaling $300,000 will fund the development of a sustainable wearable sensor system to continuously monitor tree health. The key products and services to be delivered include: The project will create a zero-maintenance, intelligent, and robust computer system that uses biocompatible sensor arrays implanted in plant xylem to monitor water and nutrient uptake...
- This $1.17 million Project Grant from the Department of Agriculture's National Resources Conservation Service through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program will fund Worcester Polytechnic Institute's development of an AI-based radar system to increase irrigation efficiency on megafarms by at least 50%. Michigan Technological University will provide technical support through the development of a fast full-waveform inversion technique integrated with machine learning and Bayesian simulation...
- This $500,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of International Science and Engineering (CFDA 47.079) supports the "LEVERAGING BIO-CHEMICAL AND GREENHOUSE GAS SENSORS FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE INNOVATIONS (BIOSENSEINNOVATIONS)" project. The project aims to develop cutting-edge sensors that can detect nutrients, chemical compounds, soil microbiomes, and greenhouse gases in real-time to advance precision agriculture and promote sustainable farming...
THE PROJECT OBJECTIVE IS TO GREATLY REDUCE THE COST OF MONITORING SOIL WATER CONTENT IN HIGHLY-RESOLVED VERTICAL PROFILE TO PROMOTE INCREASED ADOPTION OF MORE EFFICIENT WATER MANAGEMENT TOOLS. COST IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT BARRIER TO ADOPTION OF SOPHISTICATED DATA-DRIVEN IRRIGATION MANAGEMENT IN PERMANENT AGRICULTURE. HIGHLY-RESOLVED VERTICAL SOIL WATER PROFILES ARE NEEDED TO LEARN SOIL-SPECIFIC HYDRAULIC RESPONSE AND TO ACCURATELY INFER CROP WATER UPTAKE AND DEEP DRAINAGE FLUXES FROM MONITORED CHANGES IN THE STORAGE PROFILE. BASING IRRIGATION DECISIONS ON THE TIME-VARYING SOIL HYDRAULIC BEHAVIOR LEARNED IN SITU WILL ENABLE THE IMPROVEMENT OF WATER AND ENERGY CONSERVATION, RESOURCE PROTECTION, AND ADAPTABILITY TO CLIMATE CHANGE. THE MASSIVE PROLIFERATION OF WIRELESS ACCESSORIES HAS DRIVEN THE COST OF INTEGRATED CIRCUIT (IC) BASED PROGRAMMABLE RF TRANSCEIVERS UNPRECEDENTEDLY LOW AND USABILITY UNPRECEDENTEDLY HIGH. WE PROPOSE TO REPURPOSE LOW-COST RF CHIPS AS SOIL WATER SENSING DEVICES AR
