- Blue Ocean Gear Inc. was awarded a $399,613 Project Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration under the NOAA Small Business Innovation Research Program to develop a smart buoy device to locate ropeless fishing gear from February 1, 2021 through July 31, 2022. The SBIR Program seeks to stimulate technological innovation in the private sector and strengthen the role of small businesses in meeting federal research and development needs, including commercialization of...
- Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences (CFDA 47.050 – Geosciences program) awarded the University of Washington $299,987 under an Exploratory Research (EAGER) Project Grant, effective September 1, 2025 through August 31, 2027, to develop BOBBERONE, a low-cost, portable acoustic sensing float for cross-trophic biological observation in coastal waters. The primary deliverable is an integrated Internet of Things (IoT) instrument combining active and passive...
- This $149,872 Project Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program (CFDA 11.021), aims to develop a community-driven marine coastal data ecosystem. Cell Matrix Corporation will create a participatory sensor network and scalable cloud service to support geospatial object and database queries. A mobile app will motivate mariners to interact and provide timely geospatial feature updates. The viability of an...
- Swift Engineering Inc. received a $150,000 Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration under the Small Business Innovation Research Program to develop an Internet of Things-enabled water sensor solution called Kelp. The buoy-based Kelp system will monitor multiple water quality parameters with high-resolution, near real-time data collection for emerging markets in estuarine environmental monitoring, dam facilities, harmful algae bloom monitoring, and...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded Sustainable Seas Technology Inc. a $599,998 two-year Project Grant under the Fisheries Development and Utilization Research and Development Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program (CFDA 11.427). The grant will support testing of subsea buoy retrieval systems in three Southeastern states to provide a detailed performance analysis and economic effectiveness evaluation of ropeless fishing gear configurations. Project partners will test...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $500,000 Cooperative Agreement under the Weather and Air Quality Research program (CFDA 11.459) to Windborne Systems Inc., a small business based in Palo Alto, California. The funding supports the development of four key capabilities for Windborne's Global Sounding Balloon (GSB) platform: A dropsonde capable of measuring temperature, relative humidity, pressure, and wind speed/direction that can be deployed from the GSB....
- Geometric Data Analytics Inc. received a $299,804 project grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration under the Small Business Innovation Research Program to develop artificial intelligence capabilities that improve modeling of complex ocean dynamics and assist in logistical management and planning of uncrewed deployment campaigns. Specifically, the awardee will enhance their Float Field Geometric Health software to better predict future positions of floating sensor...
- Tridentis Advanced Marine Vehicles LLC and the Watershed Innovation Laboratory at Washington College will develop technology and monitoring solutions for near-shore aquaculture installations under a $149,865 project grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Specifically, the awardees will establish baseline water quality and shellfish testing for aquaculture farms, then develop an efficient and cost-effective material solution to continuously monitor environmental...
- Field Data Services LLC will conduct a $297,032 technical feasibility study under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program project grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Department of Commerce. The study aims to determine the commercial viability of a new solid state lidar sensor chip for detecting migrating anadromous fish in small spawning streams. Field Data Services will build an automated test system to characterize the lidar's ability to detect...
- Fisheries Vulnerability Assessment for Floating Offshore Wind Development Oregon State University (OSU) was awarded $1.087 million under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program (CFDA 11.469) on August 1, 2025, to conduct a comprehensive Fisheries Vulnerability Assessment addressing the potential impacts of floating offshore wind (FOSW) development on Oregon's commercial fisheries. The two-year project, extending...
AS GLOBAL EFFORTS TOWARD OCEAN HEALTH HAVE GAINED MOMENTUM, IT IS CRITICAL TO GENERATE HIGHQUALITY OCEAN DATA FOR INDUSTRIES THAT OPERATE AND/OR MANAGE OCEAN RESOURCES. BLUE OCEAN GEAR HAS DEMONSTRATED HOW SMART BUOYS EQUIPPED WITH SENSORS CAN BE USEFUL TO FISHERIES BY TRACKING GEAR AND PROVIDING ENHANCED MARINE CONDITION AWARENESS. BUILDING ON PHASE I EFFORTS, THIS PROJECT WILL HIGHLIGHT THE OPPORTUNISTIC USE OF FISHING GEAR ALREADY OUT ON THE WATER TO PROVIDE RELEVANT DATA FOR ADJACENT INDUSTRIES. BLUE OCEAN GEAR'S COMBINATION OF HARDWARE AND DATA WILL RESULT IN A POWERFUL MEANS OF OBTAINING BETTER INSIGHTS TO OCEAN CONDITIONS IN HIGH SPATIAL GRANULARITY FOR OFFSHORE REGIONS. THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL BRING TO REALIZATION THE FEATURES REQUIRED FOR A LOW-COST, RUGGED, SENSOR-RICH DATA BUOY. DEPLOYMENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE THE VALUE OF BUOY DATA FROM FISHING GEAR IN ALASKA AND/OR THE GULF OF MEXICO FOR USE WITH METEOROLOGISTS AND OFFSHORE WIND DEVELOPMENT. THE RESULTING DATA PRODUCT
