Description

This project proposes to increase science proficiency and foster interest in the natural resources that surround high school students of hana high and elementary school in hana, maui for the next two school years, 2023-2024 and 2024-2025. We will achieve these goals by providing ahupuaa-based in-classroom and outdoor educational experiences within the watersheds of east maui that encompass a variety of ecosystems on the windward slopes of haleakala - rainforest, streams, cultivated farms, and intertidal. Supplemental educational opportunities for personalized stewardship action projects will be provided during monthly weekend excursions at community partner restoration sites, where students will learn about indigenous, traditional and current methods of natural resource management. Each year of the program will culminate in a hoike event where students share their knowledge gained through stewardship experiences with their peers and community.
