The key objectives are to: 1) Design and facilitate structured knowledge exchange workshops to co-develop...
- The U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Headquarters Region 9 awarded a $192,164 Project Grant through the Marine Turtle Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.645) to Asociacion Procosta, a non-profit organization in El Salvador. The project aims to empower local communities to enhance and sustain hawksbill sea turtle nesting productivity at three key sites in El Salvador: Jiquilisco Bay, Los Cbanos, and Punta Amapala. Key activities include safeguarding over 600 hawksbill...
- The Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded a $127,017 Project Grant under the Broad Agency Announcement (CFDA 11.015) to The Ocean Foundation to collect sea turtle genetic samples. This will contribute to conservation and management planning efforts, and improve stock assessments and status reviews for sea turtle populations. The project will run from Sep 1, 2023 to Aug 31, 2024. Sea turtles are important components of healthy ocean and coral reef...
- This Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Broad Agency Announcement (CFDA 11.015) provides $242,735 to The Ocean Foundation to conduct sea turtle conservation research. Key project goals include: Collecting genetic samples from sea turtle nesting populations (leatherbacks, greens, and hawksbills) to expand baseline datasets and define population boundaries Compiling existing datasets to assess bycatch and update population parameters...
- This Project Grant award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Marine Turtle Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.645) provides $285,011.71 to Traffic International, a UK-based non-profit organization, to implement an innovative, multidisciplinary project aimed at reducing major threats to marine turtle populations in Peninsular Malaysia and Vietnam. The key objectives of the project are to: 1) increase knowledge, skills, and capacity for effectively interdicting wildlife trafficking operations...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded The Ocean Foundation $341,906 under the Broad Agency Announcement federal grant program (CFDA 11.015) to support genetic sampling and data compilation efforts for sea turtle nesting populations from September 1, 2021 through August 31, 2023. The key products and services to be delivered include collecting genetic samples from leatherback, green, and hawksbill sea turtle nesting sites to expand baseline nesting datasets defining...
- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, through its Marine Turtle Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.645) program, awarded a $135,413 project grant to the Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation. This grant, effective from August 1, 2024 to July 31, 2027, will support conservation efforts for six highly threatened tortoise and freshwater turtle species in Bangladesh. The Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation will utilize a three-pronged approach of conservation breeding, rewilding, and community engagement to...
- The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has awarded a $320,000 Cooperative Agreement to Colorado State University under the CFDA Program 15.812 - Cooperative Research Units. The project, titled "Sea Turtle Demography," will run from February 23, 2024 to February 22, 2027. The key objectives of this project are to: (1) evaluate the effectiveness of various monitoring methods and survey designs for assessing sea turtle nest abundance, (2) refine demographic estimates for loggerhead sea turtles...
GLOBALLY, SEA TURTLES ARE THREATENED WITH EXTINCTION DUE TO A VARIETY OF HUMAN THREATS SUCH AS ILLEGAL HARVEST FOR FOOD, HABITAT LOSS, AND ACCIDENTAL MORTALITY IN MARINE FISHERIES. GIVEN THAT SEA TURTLES ARE HIGHLY MIGRATORY AND OFTEN CONDUCT TRANS-OCEANIC MIGRATIONS BETWEEN NESTING AND FORAGING SITES AND THAT THE MAJORITY OF SEA TURTLE NESTING FOR MOST SPECIES OCCURS OUTSIDE OF THE U.S., INTERNATIONAL CAPACITY BUILDING AND TRAINING EFFORTS ARE REQUIRED TO IMPLEMENT EFFECTIVE CONSERVATION STRATEGIES AS WELL AS TO PROMOTE COOPERATION AND COORDINATION FOR MANAGEMENT OF SEA TURTLE POPULATIONS AMONG COUNTRIES. THEREFORE, THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO PROVIDE SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS, BUILD THE CAPACITY OF LOCAL PROJECTS, IMPROVE OUR KNOWLEDGE, UNDERSTANDING AND DATA COLLECTION AT KEY SEA TURTLE NESTING BEACH AND FORAGING AREAS, AND ENSURE THAT EFFECTIVE NESTING BEACH PROJECTS AND BYCATCH REDUCTION STUDIES AND PROGRAMS ARE IMPLEMENTED TO PROM
